BYU-Hawaii Performance Series will present “A Christmas Concert: For Unto Us a Child is Given” on Dec. 2 at 8 p.m. in the McKay Auditorium. The concert will provide special Christmas music, brought to you by BYUH students, a faculty member, and community vocalists. It will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, with music from different parts of the world.

As the Christmas season fast approaches, people find different ways to celebrate the Christmas spirit. “It’s nice to have a formal Christmas concert that is focused on the Savior and celebrates his birth from the view of different cultures,” said Brian Rae, assistant coordinator of Performance Series.

“The Christmas concert came up because of a budget issue,” Rae adds. “We wanted to bring a prominent LDS artist to perform, but because of budget shortage, we decided to use the talents of the Laie community and students on the campus.”

Performers will include the BYUH African and Japanese clubs, as well as student vocalists Roger Brown, Denzil Kumar, and Janelle Parker. Past BYUH “So You Think You Can Sing” (formerly BYUH Idol) winners Irish Lugo, Suzanne Wong-Fairchild, Phillip Andrus, and Janette Manzano Catalan will also participate, as well as finalist Nathan Fuluvaka. Hawaii Stars winner Legran Akana, accomplished vocalist Arlanda Tevaga, and professor Jon Stansell are also scheduled to perform.

“I’m so excited to sing beautiful Christmas songs and enjoy the peaceful spirit the songs will bring,” said Kentaro Takatsuka, senior in International Business from Japan, who is part of the performance.

In addition to the performance, Japanese Club will be hosting a food drive in the McKay Auditorium lobby on the night of the performance for local food banks.

“It’s a fantastic way for students of diverse cultures to enjoy the season together,” said Mark Levi, a sophomore in biology from Seattle. Prices are as follows:

General admission ($7)
BYUH/PCC Employees, military, missionary, and seniors ($5)
BYUH student and children (5yrs-17yrs) ($3)
