Eric Shumway and friends hope to raise awareness of diabetes in Tonga

“‘Oku ‘I Ho ‘Aofinima Ho’o Mo’ui Lelei” is a video series headed by former BYU-Hawaii President Eric Shumway meant to change the eating behavior of Tongans and help them understand what they can do to avoid diabetes.

Students experience a taste of Tonga

BYU-Hawaii Cafeteria brought the authentic taste of Tonga to their menu on Jan 9. to initiate a new focus of sharing culture through food. 
 
Tongan main courses, desserts and soups were available and all were labeled in both English and Tongan languages.

Tupou Taufu'i keeps her faith strong to do her studies well

Tupou Taufu‘i has found academic success by putting the Lord and her family first. “I can see when my life is spiritually strong, my academic life is way better,” said Taufu‘i, a graduating senior in TESOL from Tonga, “and if I’m not living the gospel, the opposite is true.”

Cyclone destroys 80 percent of Tongan homes

A category four cyclone, Cyclone Ian, hit the islands of Tonga on Jan. 11 killing one person but destroying people’s homes. The focal point of the storm occurred on the island group called Ha’apai where 8,000 people live.
