“The day of miracles has not ceased. This is the era of miracles in these latter-days. Expect them, recognize them, appreciate them,” said Sister Susan Tanner, wife of BYU-Hawaii President John Tanner, in the first devotional of Fall 2018 on Sep 11.
President John Tanner, away for meetings, wrote an email to introduce Sis. Tanner saying, "Susan looks for and expects miracles including daily little miracle[s] that most people would not notice.
“She has encouraged us all in the family to live with greater faith and greater appreciation for God’s mercies and miracles, large and small. I don’t know of a person who lives more fully of what she will teach today.”
To help listeners remember her lesson, Sis. Tanner thoughtfully applied the acronym E.R.A: to expect, recognize, and appreciate miracles.
From Moroni 7:35-37 in the Book of Mormon, Sis. Tanner read, “...has the day of miracles ceased?... Behold I say unto you, Nay; for it is by faith that miracles are wrought; and it is by faith that angels appear and minister unto men.”
“I hope that you will have this moment of reprieve and rejuvenation and the worship that we offer. It’s a beautiful time for us to fill our hearts with the Spirit of the Lord,” Sis. Tanner said. “Expect, exert your faith in prayers for needed miracles, recognize them, notice your amazing blessings. Appreciate and show gratitude to a loving Heavenly Father who wants the best for us.”
From Doctrine and Covenants 98, Sis. Tanner added, “Let your hearts be comforted… for your prayers have entered the ears of the Lord… and all things shall work together for your good.”
Regarding the prophecy of BYUH, Sis. Tanner quoted Pres. David O. McKay, “All the blessings work together for your good, so you could be here in this era. Appreciating these mercies in your life will help you to give back, be builders of ‘peace internationally’.”
Sis. Tanner also instructed that it’s important to recognize the angels that surround and support us all. She quoted Elder Jeffrey R. Holland, apostle of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, saying, “In the course of life all of us spend time in dark and dreary places… I testify of angels, both the heavenly and immortal kind. Always there are angles that come and go all around us.”
Sis. Tanner continued, “You’ve probably had such blessings, angels surrounding you, and attending you and giving you the ability to just make it through that trial. Did you notice those blessings? Did you thank Heavenly Father for them?
“As witnesses, we have been gathered here to thank and to attest of mercies and miracles.”
In the conclusion of her message, Sis. Tanner shared, “I do witness of mercies and miracles in our lives. I want to teach you, as my mother taught me, Heavenly Father knows us. He loves us. The day of miracles has not ceased. This is the era of miracles in these latter-days. Expect them, recognize them, and appreciate them.
“I know He is on our right and on our left. His Spirit is in our hearts and His angels are round about us ready to help and bear us up.”
