The BYU-Hawaii women's tennis team finished its regular season with an 8-1 victory against Hawaii Pacific at the BYU-Hawaii Tennis Courts on Tuesday, April 11.
The women's tennis team, ranked No. 1 according to a BYUH press release, beat No. 5 Hawaii Pacific Sharks in front of a crowd of 352. The crowd was offered free snowcones from a snowcone truck and given free shirts for attending.
No. 2 Nannan "Dallas" Zhang and Xin Wen gave BYU-Hawaii (24-0) the first match of the day with an 8-3 victory over Lara Meccico and Barbora Kijasova of Hawaii Pacific (10-4). No. 11 Min "Karen" Liu and Leah Heimuli finished close behind their Seasider teammates with an 8-3 win of their own over Non. 9 Nicole Hoynaski and Oceane Adam. Jeong-Min Jeon and Michelle Li Sha Khoo completed the doubles sweep with an 8-4 victory over their Shark opponents on court three.
Jeon opened up singles play with a quick 6-0, 6-1 victory, while Leah Heimuli secured the team match victory with a 6-1, 6-4 win on court four. No. 11 Wen fought back from an early deficit in the first set to build momentum in a 7-5, 6-3 win over No. 19 Meccico.
The Sharks grabbed their lone point of the game on court three as No. 48 Adam outlasted No. 2 Liu 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (8) in a back-and-forth match. No. 1 Zhang ran her singles win streak to 48 matches winning the final three games in both sets to take a 6-4, 6-4 match over No. 3 Hoynaski, her highest ranked opponent of the season. Khoo dispatched Leticia dos Santos 6-3, 6-4 to give BYU-Hawaii the final point of the match.
Zhang, a senior from China studying accounting, said, "At this point of our season the whole team is doing a terrific job. We just finished our last home match in Laie. We feel blessed to be playing well and performing some good tennis in front of our coach, teachers, and the awesome crowds who came to support our last match here.
"It is an honor for me to help the team defend the No. 1 position in the region. I am very excited about the conference tournament in the coming week and looking forward to the upcoming postseason."
The Seasiders will travel to Surprise, Arizona, for the PacWest Women's Tennis Championships April 19-22. Team seedings for the tournament will be announced in the coming weeks.
