iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus sold a combined total of over 10 million models, said Apple in a press release Sept. 22. At the time of the report, the iPhone was only available for sale in 10 countries, including the United States, Canada, Australia, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Puerto Rico, Singapore and the United Kingdom.“I think a part of it is just the trend, and plus a lot of people already have an iPhone. Once you’re already set and with that company, then you’re much more engaged and willing to get that new phone when it comes out. You already know that company, you know what you like,” said Kayla White, a senior studying ICS from Idaho. The New York Times reported that sales of the iPhone account for roughly 70% of Apple’s profit, meaning that these early sales numbers can help predict the quarterly, even annual, results for the company. Maynard Um, a senior research analyst for Wells Fargo told the New York Times that Apple is expected to sell about 58 million iPhones in the holiday quarter alone, about seven million more than the same period a year ago.The new iPhone 6 and 6 Plus come in several different colors, and Apple added a new phone with a larger memory capacity of 128GB, in addition to previous models only making 16GB and 64GB available.Jacob Wright, a freshman studying exercise science and psychology from Hawaii, said “Honestly, [the iPhone] is really helpful. You can organize your life on a cell phone. You have your calendar, you have messages, you have email, you have Canvas, you have everything you need on your cell phone. If I have something upcoming, I can put it in my phone, if I have homework I can put it on my to-do list, it’s great.”The most exciting feature of the iPhone 6 models, however, is the size of the phone itself. The iPhone 6 has a screen of 4.7 inches (measured diagonally), and the iPhone 6 Plus has a screen of 5.5 inches. Such high sales show the public demand for said larger screens. Many students and consumers speculated that Apple released phones with larger screens to compete with other phones, such as the Samsung Galaxy 5, with its screen size of 5.1 inches, and the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, which a giant 5.7 inch screen. Devin Winstanley, a freshman from Colorado studying business management thinks making a phone with a larger screen was a good move for Apple. “The different screen sizes is a great idea, because some people like the bigger screen, and some like the smaller. That might have been one of the flaws in their company before, because they only had the one size.” Winstanley continues that many Apple customers could have opted for Samsung because of their bigger screens and option. Now that Apple offers a larger screen, more people will use Apple, he speculated.Apple was worried about the potential of one-handed use of the iPhone 6 Plus. To account for this concern, Apple integrated what tech review site techradar.com called “a sometimes useful but weird software feature” called “reachability.”Reachability is activated by double-tapping the home button on any screen, and is deactivated by the same double-tap. When activated, reachability brings down the top half of the screen to the bottom half, allowing for the thumb to access the screen without the help of another hand or the uncomfortable stretch to reach. This feature is getting mixed reviews. According to a video reviewer at the New York Times, when activated on any screen but the home screen, the remaining top half of the screen becomes a black square, and often times buttons that normally are at the bottom of the screen become unavailable, even with scrolling down (such as the “reply” button in the email feature), and reachability must be deactivated to access said buttons. In the same video, the reviewer mentioned that the screen on the iPhone 6 Plus is a great size, however it does not seem to be able to utilize the screen size the same way that other large phones can. For example, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 allows app screens to be resized, allowing for multitasking like on a PC.In the end, both the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus received a 4.5 out of five stars on websites such as techradar.com and CNET.
