Competitors say playing interactive pool games made successful summertime activity

Students use inflatable rafts to participate in a Battleship competition on June 8.

Seasider Sports and Activities hosted Battleships in the Pool on June 8 at the BYU–Hawaii swimming pool resulting in more than 100 people in attendance to enjoy food and a variety of games in the pool.

The event lasted two hours and featured a head-to-head paddling race and other games in the pool such as “rescue the ref” where teams had to collect different objects for points. Eight teams comprised of six people competed. The refreshments, cocoa rice and bread, were provided by Tita’s Grill.

Deidra Chandra, a senior majoring in graphic design from Malaysia, spectated the event. She said, “It’s my first time going to something like this. I’ve noticed Seasider Sports has been putting on a lot more activities, creative activities like this and it’s been really cool to watch.

“It’s been really fun to watch the teams compete and have fun out in the water. I came to support my friend that’s competing. I’ve enjoyed watching her and everyone else compete tonight.”

Michelle Khoo, a senior majoring in exercise and sports science from Malaysia, said she had an enjoyable experience participating in the event. “It was a lot of fun competing with my team. I’m not good at paddling but it was fun to participate with my team and enjoy the event together.

“It was cool to have an event here at the swimming pool. I haven’t seen anything done like this before by Seasider Sports so it was nice to have an interactive activity using the pool.”

A sizeable crowd gathered in the stands of the swimming pool and cheered on the competing teams as they raced around the pool in inflatable rafts and participated in other games. The event also had music, an emcee, and several lifeguards working.

Sophie Tanner, a sophomore majoring in English from Las Vegas and Seasider Sports and Activities employee, helped in organizing the event. She said, “We’ve never done this event before. We wanted to do something new and have a fun activity on campus. It’s summertime so we wanted to do some fun games using the pool and get everyone involved.

“We’ve been planning this for maybe a month or two. We got a lot of equipment to make this activity happen. We got inflatable rafts, tested them out in the ocean and also got a lot of other sports and fun equipment to use.”

Seasider Sports and Activities have held several events throughout the semester such as a dance competition, a streetball tournament, and a kickball tournament which have all been well attended by students.

Tanner added, “The event has gone really well. We had a great turnout, more than 100 students came tonight and we hope to do something like this again in the future.”
