More than 180 students join Facebook Tent City page, but BYUH leaders say the housing shortage will improve

Trella Schlutsmeyer said when she noticed so many BYUH students planning to live in tents and cars if they didn’t get housing, she made a Facebook group to help them coordinate their living situations. The group, called Unofficial BYUH Tent City, boasts more than 180 members. She said the purpose of the group was to create a community for students without housing to safely camp on campus.

Appointment of new Mongolian business professor renews hope for Mongolian students to follow their dreams and fulfill prophecy

Tsetsgee Enkhbold, a senior from Mongolia majoring in business management and president of the Amiable Mongolian Club, said the Mongolian students are overjoyed to welcome a new professor from home. Tserennyam Sukhbaatar filled a new position in the Faculty of Business & Government as the first BYU–Hawaii faculty member from Mongolia.

Two sister missionaries, unable to return home due to COVID-19, foster faith by attending BYUH

Unable to return to their home country of Tonga due to COVID-19 restrictions, Sisters Dorothy Tonga and Asena Kisepi, missionaries at the Laie Temple Visitor’s Center, have been attending BYU–Hawaii as students and full-time missionaries since Winter Semester 2021. On Oct. 8, Tonga was released from full-time service, and Kisepi was released the following Sunday.

Title IX officials welcome new deputy coordinator and share new changes

The Title IX Office hired a new deputy coordinator and is hoping to educate students about what happens when they report sexual misconduct through new videos, rebranding, and an emphasis on training BYU–Hawaii staff. A senior missionary and two Title IX employees shared what they wish students knew about their office, including the difference between Title IX and Honor Code, as well as how much the people at Title IX care about the students who come to them.

I-HHELPP, a humanitarian non-profit started out of Utah, continues in success as it reaches five-year anniversary

I-HHELPP began as a non-profit in 2014 when BYU–Hawaii alumni wanted to build disaster-proof homes to improve the lives of those in the Philippines. It has since transformed to an organization building public bathrooms and other necessities for poor communities in the Philippines.
