Hawaii to test missile sirens in November in case of North Korea attack

This November, the state of Hawaii will begin a statewide air raid warning siren test to be used to warn of North Korean missile attacks, according to Honolulu Star Advertiser. BYU-Hawaii students expressed concern that not enough people on the island know that the tests are going to happen until closer to the time of the alarm.

The man behind the bowtie: Retiring TESOL professor, Dr. Neil J. Anderson, reflects on his 41-year-old career

While he appears to be an average, bow-tie-wearing professor, Dr. Neil J. Anderson is known as a “TESOL international rockstar,” a name dubbed by BYU–Hawaii Dean Mark Wolfersberger. Anderson, a professor in the Faculty of English & Social Work, shared experiences from his 41-year career as an internationally-acclaimed TESOL professor and researcher. He plans to retire from BYUH after the Spring 2021 Semester.

Director of Broadway Review says their concert shows how its members are motivated to inspire others

Enhanced with choreography and lighting, BYU-Hawaii’s Broadway Review on Nov. 16 in the McKay Auditorium, sang tunes from modern and classic movies. The show was called “A Night at the Movies,” and its spectacle would not be possible without the dedicated members of the group, according the director of Broadway Review, Dr. Melissa Glenn. Outside of four hours of in-class rehearsal per week, Glenn said, students put in their own time outside of class to choreography, practice solos, research costumes, and rehearse.

Laie Elementary School librarian says local author inspires children to ‘chase their big dreams too’

Several years after Rebecca J. Carlson wrote “Barley & Rye,” a 12,000-word story intended as a gift for her son’s 9th birthday, she said she found a publisher called Fiction Vortex who agreed to publish her story. Upon the publisher’s request, Carlson expanded the story to 50,000 words.

High school students participate in games and performances based on legends to share Samoan culture

Thousands of people filled the Polynesian Cultural Center and tuned in on social media as several hundred high school students came together in “fealofani” [friendship] to demonstrate their knowledge of Samoan culture on May 11 during the 27th Annual High School Samoan Cultural Arts Festival.
