During the Wiley Efficient Learning Info Session on Feb. 18, Carla Ng, a CPA and regional director of Wiley CPAexcel from California, introduced the CPA exam’s educational and experiential requirements and application process to BYU–Hawaii students. More than 30 students attended the event.

BYUH accounting seniors said the event benefited them greatly. They learned about the exam and received discounts for the Wiley CPA review course that costs $2,275.

CPAs, or certified public accountants, are “trusted financial advisors who help individuals, businesses, and other organizations plan and reach their financial goals,” according to aicpa.org.

Cromwell Barredo, a senior from the Philippines majoring in accounting, said, “I received much useful information from this info session. I know it is a hard exam, but knowing what to expect and how to prepare was a good start for me. I am planning to take at least two of the four exams before I graduate.”

Explaining why it is so important to become certified, Barredo shared, “Certifying as a public accountant is a crowning jewel for accountants. Becoming a CPA makes a big difference for accountants’ value, pay, and things they can do. CPAs are in high demand in the market.”

Ron Chand, a senior from Fiji majoring in accounting and marketing, said, “Carla’s introduction about the test was very helpful, and the discount of 55 percent is a great help for me. My career goal is to become a business developer. Since accounting is the language of business, being a CPA will help me to get closer to my goal faster. I want to have permission to give accounting advice to companies.”

Jie-hua Lin, a senior from Taiwan majoring in accounting, said she is going to take the CPA exam this summer, so this info session was crucial for her. She won the event’s raffle contest and was chosen to be the recipient of the Wiley CPAexcel’s Gold CPA Review Course.

“It was an important beginning for me to learn about the exam. I was able to get useful tips from Carla who has a lot of experience with the exam. She advised it is better to take the exam earlier in our careers,” Lin said.

Justin Ioane, a senior from Samoa majoring in accounting and marketing, is Wiley’s BYUH campus ambassador. He said passing the CPA exam is a major step towards becoming a certified public accountant.

He said the certification makes accountants more marketable in the field and opens more opportunities for career paths. He added as a campus ambassador, he can help inform students if they have questions about Wiley CPA prep by contacting him at jioane@gmail.com.

Ng shared, “BYUH students were very engaged, receptive, and asked good questions for me. If students have questions about the Wiley CPA, they can contact me at carla.ng@wiley.com or 925-789-7804.”

Ng said BYUH students can use the discount link she set up through the University of Hawaii. This 55 percent discount will be available until April 30, 2020 and can be found at https://www.efficientlearning.com/partner/uhwo/uhwo-cpa/

At the end of the info session, those in attendance played a Kahoot! game to review information and test their knowledge of the prep course.
