Smog season in China closes schools, highways, factories
Air pollution sky-rocketed to 40 times the international safety standard in Beijing, China in October, reports the New York Times, and visibility has been reduced to incredible lows as the city enters its most vulnerable smog season. Local Chinese media reports visibility has been as low as 50 yards across Northern China.

Female students say it's unexcusable for a groom to forget his bride
When the women on BYU–Hawaii campus heard about a German groom leaving his newlywed bride at a gas station, they were astounded. It was made very clear, by female student’s comments, that this was “not right.”

In appreciation for the work they do, 11-year-old boy donates $10.03 to local police
Clerk Brittany Eickhorst was sitting at the Greenfield Police Station front desk in Wisconsin on Sept. 13 when in walks a small, red-headed boy alone with a bag of coins. The boy walks up to the counter, puts the bag of $10.03 on the desk, and says, “I would like to donate this money to the Greenfield Police Department,” then says goodbye and walks out. According to fox6now.com, Eickhorst said, “At first, the way he was looking, I thought ‘Is he lost?’”

Students, legislators continue to debate increasing the minimum wage
Hawaiian legislators are advocating for an increase of the federally funded minimum wage to $10 an hour, more than $2 higher than the current federally mandated minimum wage. But the House and the Senate couldn’t agree on language for the bill and it did not get passed before the end of the legislative year in April 2013, says Hawaii Reporter.
