Campus comment: What culture would you want to grow up in?

Riann Ande, a freshman studying elementary education from Chuuk, Micronesia, said, “I’ve always wanted to go to countries in Europe.”

Emylyn Walter, a freshman studying elementary education from Chuuk, said, “My ancestors come from Japan, and I want to know about that culture.”

Hiba Arkoh, a freshman studying hospitality and tourism management from Ghana, said, “Kiribati. They’re friendly and they have a lot of love. They’re all so lovely.” She moved to Kiribati in 2007 and lived there for eight years before coming to BYU–Hawaii.

Ntonga Terabwena, a freshman studying TESOL from Kiribati, said, “Marshallese culture. I served there and they’re fun people. They have a similar culture, and they’re funny. You say a funny joke, and they say it back.”

Cassis Boateng, a senior studying psychology from Ghana, said, “I think Asian culture is similar to what we have in Africa. They have a collective mentality where people care about others. I would love to experience it sometime in the future.”

Davisson Francisco de Oliveira, a sophomore studying computer science from Brazil, said, “Mexican. There are more happy people, and it's more open. They know how to have fun.”

Julie Nelson, a freshman studying math education from California, said, “European. Everything seems so close knit.”

Alex Zufelt, a sophomore studying international cultural studies from California, said, “Mexican culture. It's similar to how it is in Hawaii, how it's relaxed and there’s no stress. I feel like I fit in.”
