Flavorful food, different stations, prizes and sweet-toned music echoed around campus as the school held its first Date Night activity on Jan. 31. The event started with game shows in the first hour and succeeded with a series of stations like speed-dating, origami making, line-dancing, varieties of food, different sports, and more.
Jared Stout, a sophomore majoring in business management from California, said whenever the school put out activities he would attend them and have fun. He said he joined the event because of the prizes students could win. He added the atmosphere created made it more enjoyable to meet new people. Engaging in activities like this helped him meet his fiancé and people from different cultures, he said.
The Dean of Students T. James Faustino, from Hauula, said the inspiration for the event came from the commissioner’s office which saw it happen in the school’s sister institution, BYU-Idaho. Faustino said the success they observed from BYU-Idaho date night is why BYUH is having one this year. He added the goal they had in mind was to help the students know the three principles of dating in the campus community which are to plan ahead, pay for and pair off. He said he reminded students that dating should be fun with an established purpose.
Jonathan Kala Kau, the vice president of Student Life, said the activity was an important opportunity the faculty and staff wanted to participate in and revisit the idea with the school’s unique style. He said the utmost encouragement given throughout this event is to have a positive dating culture established at BYUH. Kau said, “We want to help students feel more confident in their opportunities to connect with other students through dating and develop meaningful friendships and lasting relationships.”
