Students gather for the Photography Club's opening social to learn about taking photos and videos
While enjoying live music, speeches, pizza and learning about camera equipment, members of the campus Photography Club shared advice on how to take beautiful pictures and videos. The event featured students who excel in the field of photography and alumni who have gone on to pursue photographic careers.
Karl Marquez, the vice president of Photography Club and a senior majoring in communications and media from the Philippines, said, “The Photography Club invites people, especially those who want to learn photography … to learn about how to use their cameras and learn about photography as a hobby or passion.”
He shared, “The club will help students connect with other students who share the same interest as well as people who are famous or professionals in this field.” Marquez stated although the club had previously been established, Joseph Ariono, the president, had only recently reopened it this semester.
Marquez explained, "We [the club presidency] were aware that there were many students who are either involved in photography in school or are interested in photography, so we restarted the club in hopes they would come, and they did.”
As the club's president and a senior from Indonesia majoring in communications, Ariono said, "The club's goal is to assist anyone interested in photography and anyone who wants to pursue photography as a career in the future." He said there are 49 members of the club, but more students are still joining.
"I want to share my knowledge with other students to help them excel in their photography skills and knowledge," he continued. For their first social gathering, he said he invited people with expertise in photography to share their knowledge, advice and tips with the club's members.
Anaïs Fry, a junior majoring in social work from Boston, said, “I joined the club because I enjoy photography, and it is a passion of mine.” Fry said she enjoyed the social gathering because it allowed her to pick up many pointers and suggestions for improving her photographic abilities.
It was fascinating to learn about things like the various features of cameras, said Fry. She continued, "My favorite lesson from the event is just to be creative and not be afraid to try new angles, new perspectives, or even mess around after you take [the pictures].”
Marquez said capturing moments makes him happy and photography has helped him cope with the stress of school. He said, "Photography is not just taking pictures. It's also taking stories for a lifetime."
Ariono encouraged students to join the club and to approach the club presidency if they have any questions or need help capturing photos for events. He expressed his gratitude towards the school for allowing them to restart the club and for allowing them to help students with photography skills.
