Differences between the Provo and Hawaii campuses extend further than just university size and diversity, but in how students dress. The hang-loose sign is part of the Hawaiian culture and ties directly to the laid-back style of the Aloha State. From board shorts to aloha shirts, the culture in Hawaii is conducive to casual and comfortable living.Recent transfer student, Chelsea Ellsworth, a senior in hospitality and tourism management from Colorado, has seen both styles firsthand. She spoke of the main difference in style between the Provo and Hawaii campuses. “Hawaii is much more casual, comfortable, and logical, while Provo is fancier and more hipster.” While Hawaii has formed a culture of casual dress, hipster has become the new fashion trend for Provo. Men are seen sporting tight pants, shirts with the top buttons buttoned, and mismatched clothing. “Hipster is more of a mentality than a way of dress. I feel like when you are a hipster you think you are not conforming to what other people think, but essential you are,” said Caressa Pitt, a sophomore and graphic design major from Pupukea. Former BYUH, now BYU student, James Clay, a fashion coinsurer, commented that Provo students are much more concerned with what they wear than BYUH students. Clay gave his take on the hottest trends in Provo this semester. “For women, riding boots are the hottest thing on the market. Riding boots for days! Boots in general are huge for guys and girls, lots of layers, and tons of peacoats. No slippers, very few vans or that laid back west coast style. In the gym, it is straight tube socks and baggy shorts. Provo all-stars baby,” said Clay. When asked whether he preferred Hawaii style to Provo style, junior in marketing from Utah, Josh Riboldi shared his opinion. “Provo style is the definition of lack of style. You either have the zoobies who wear running shoes and high socks or the summer sales dudes that just looks silly. Neither is very pleasant. Then again, don't take my word for it.”
