Honolulu is a good place for students to go to shop, hang out with friends, and just have fun. However, it is on the other side of the island, and most students don’t have cars. Here are some ideas for students to travel without their own mode of transport.Taylor Bobbitt, a psychology major from California, commented on how helpful it is to shop in Honolulu. “I go there for the shopping center mostly. I go there for Wal-Mart because it’s cheaper to go to Honolulu then to go other places,” she added. The bus is a good option for students. It is fairly cheap, only costing $2.50 for a one-way ticket. Students are able to take the 55 straight to Ala Moana Shopping Center with no transfers. While it may seem like a long wait, it is well worth it considering the price. Buses do not run on holidays, so play accordingly.Hitchhiking, while legal and fairly easy, is not necessarily the recommended way to travel. “The thing about hitchhiking is it can be really easy, but it can also be pretty dangerous,” said Bobbitt. Honolulu county law states “The solicitation of free rides (hitchhiking) shall be permitted at any official bus stop of the city and county or in any open area where there are no official bus stops within a reasonable distance; provided however, that the person soliciting rides shall not stand for the purpose of such solicitation on the roadway; and provided further, that no person shall attempt to intimidate, threaten, or otherwise annoy passing motorists while engaged in hitchhiking.” However, hitchhiking isn't endorsed by the university. There is also the option of the Hertz Connect car rental service. On the BYUH website, it says “Members can book a vehicle for only an hour, a day or up to a week. As a member, you get 24-hour access to vehicles, so you can connect to the people and places that matter. Once a reservation for a vehicle is made, a Connect by Hertz member can just walk to the car, get in and go!”“If you have a friend who has a car, you can use their car and go with them,” said Bobbitt. Get a group together and offer to pay gas money to the driver, and you can have a fun and exciting day with friends in the city. This is also faster than the bus by a little over a half hour, and you can come and go at your own time instead of being on the bus’s schedule.
