Smartphone provider Apple, Inc. sold more than 9 million phones in just the first weekend the iPhone 5c and the iPhone 5s were released simultaneously on Sept. 23. This was the first time the company released two phone models at the same time. Both phones came out to the public featuring the new operating system iOS 7. Statistic Brain’s Website reports Apple has sold 89 million iPhone 5s since it was first released in September 2012.
Valuewalk.com says Apple will release an iPhone 6 next year. Speculators think it will have a larger screen, faster processor and longer battery life. iPhone 5c owner, senior Alyssa Moncur, an exercise science major from Idaho, said about the new phone, “I love everything about it. I have never had an iPhone before so it’s all new and great. I can tell my phone what I need and it does it for me.” The handset quickly sold out, especially the 5s in the new gold color.
Apple CEO Tim Cook released a statement regarding the quick sell-out of the phones, “The demand for the new iPhones has been incredible, and while we’ve sold out of our initial supply of iPhone 5s, stores continue to receive new iPhone shipments regularly. We appreciate everyone’s patience and [we] are working hard to build enough new iPhones for everyone.”
Student Lauren Jarvie, a junior from California studying exercise sports science, told of her experience receiving the new iPhone in it’s first week of release. “I found out the iPhone 5s came out on my way to the mall. When I walked in, they asked me what carrier I used and what kind of metal I wanted. I said AT&T, and gold. I had the phone in my hand five minutes after walking into the store,” Jarvie said.
