Using sports as a way to learn discipline and teamwork, alumni and students shared their passion for their hobbies and how they have matured.

Despite being a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Eddieson “Edz” Omatan Cabral said he had not heard anything about BYU–Hawaii before a couple in his branch approached him. Having spoken to a Perpetual Educational Fund (PEF) coordinator, he said it led him to being accepted and graduating from BYUH.
Following BYU–Hawaii’s announcement of a remote only 2020 Spring Semester, students said they are moving forward and adapting to classes at home or in their places of residence. Students said there are pros and cons to the remote experience and Heavenly Father has made it possible to benefit from the changes brought on by the pandemic.
As plans for a formal commencement ceremony on campus for students graduating during the Winter Semester 2020 came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, graduates said they are thankful for their time in Laie and look forward to what the future has in store for them.
The BYU–Hawaii Gamers Club organized a club tournament, which featured the best-selling video game “Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.” The club continued its ongoing tournament that started at the beginning of the 2020 Winter Semester with 24 people in attendance. Since the COVID-19 outbreak and the closures associated with the pandemic, the tournament will continue at a later date.
Diana Hawkins said she went through a challenging time during the Fall Semester 2019 due to health complications. Hawkins said despite the issues with her health, she found peace and learned perseverance by having trust in Heavenly Father with the reality of her challenges.
As Superbowl LIV came to a close, the Kansas City Chiefs won with eight minutes left in the game, snatching a comeback by scoring 21 points in the fourth quarter beating the San Francisco 49ers. The winning team’s coach, Andy Reid, celebrated the victory with the Chiefs winning their first Lombardi trophy in 50 years.
The BYU–Hawaii Residential Life team of Hale 6 brought high energy and excitement to students on Jan. 16 with a Zumba dancing workout at the Hale Pavilion. According to students, being able to mix exercise and dancing to great music was fun and contagiously exciting.

The blood drive held in the Aloha Center was welcomed by a large number of BYUH students, generating 119 confirmed blood donations over the course of two days on Jan. 30 and 31 for the Blood Bank of Hawaii.
