English professor illustrates how everyday decisions can add up to great things – or not – by sharing stories of her ancestors and from her own life
People of all ages, from children to longtime local kupuna, lined the shore of Hukilau Beach in Laie on Saturday morning Aug. 20 when a traditional grand hukilau was filmed for a documentary on the origin of the shaka sign.
Longtime BYU-Hawaii administrative assistant to four university presidents, Joanna Kaimalino Lua Thompson was remembered for her aloha, service, intellect and talents by her large extended family and friends on Saturday, July 16.
Friends and colleagues of BYU-Hawaii Math Professor Susan Barton gathered on the top floor of the new Science Building on the afternoon of June 21 to honor her and the 36 years she has taught at the university.
The aloha spirit was strong, said members of the BYU-Hawaii ohana, as they gathered in person in Utah and via Zoom to remember retiree and former business professor and university administrator William “Bill” Neal on June 10. His family reported he passed away peacefully on June 4 at the age of 73.
Music was one of the focal points of the memorial service for BYU–Hawaii alumna and longtime university employee Valerie Kaliko’okamaile Nihipali on May 26 at the Laie Hawaii North Stake Center.
A longtime campus filmmaker and BYU–Hawaii retiree Glenn Alan Gee Keong Kau was remembered at his memorial service on May 2 by family and friends for his notorious dry wit, his love of films and filmmaking, his love of good food, but mostly for his love for his ohana and the people he interacted with over the 30-plus years he worked at the university.
Joining the Church in Hong Kong when she was 10 years old, senior Taffie Kwok said her dream was to come to BYU–Hawaii and fulfilling that dream has changed her life. She graduates on April 16 majoring in communications and minoring in marketing and entrepreneurship.
Wearing leis piled up to her ears, Academics Executive Assistant Irene Lesuma was recognized for her 29 years of service at the University working for four academic vice presidents and with the campus ohana. At her retirement celebration on March 29, people shared their aloha for her and presented her with gifts.
