Two of BYU-Hawaii’s golfers, Jacob Godfrey and Nicolas Herrera, tied the course record on the Turtle Bay Resort Fazio Course during the 2017 Hawaii Challenge on April 7-8, helping the Seasiders win the Challenge for the second straight year.
“It was a good feeling after making the putt for eagle on the 18th hole to tie the course record, but it felt even better when I found out that my teammate Jacob Godfrey matched the course record as well,” said Herrera, a senior majoring in marketing from Columbia.
Godfrey, a sophomore from California majoring in accounting, added, “We shot 62, so we were both pretty happy about that on our first day.”
Herrera and Godfrey were able to use the momentum from their record rounds on the first day of the tournament to lead the field in the second and final day of the tournament, winning first and second place respectively.
According to the BYUH Athletic Department media release, Herrera won the individual championship after posting his final score 12 under par. Godfrey held on to second place, finishing at 7 under for the tournament.
Hawaii-Hilo’s Jared Kinoshita lead the field on Saturday shooting a 68, but his 74 in the first round put him too far behind the Seasiders’ leading duo to catch up.
The BYUH Seasiders’ entire team played well with all five team members scoring in the top-ten out of the field of twenty.
“We won this tournament last year over on the Big Island so it was fun to win it again,” said Godfrey.
The annual invitational participants include BYUH, Hawaii-Hilo, Hawaii Pacific, and Chaminade University.
