The Student Advisory Council (SAC) takes suggestions from students and does projects to improve students’ lives. In addition to past projects, such as a free hair-cutting service and charging stations, the team is planning more projects including a hangout spot in the Aloha Center and a trip to the Mililani Walmart.

Past projects

In the past, the SAC team has organized projects, including the “Serve and Cut” free hair-cut service at Farmer's Market and phone charging stations in the Aloha Center.

The SAC has coordinated “Serve and Cut” twice before and helped more than 40 students. They are planning to do another hair-cutting service on Feb. 21. Student Honor Team Manager Ana Ramirez, a senior from the Philippines majoring in elementary education, said they are organizing this event to help students to be in the Honor Code’s grooming standards.

Sieg Coronel, a senior from the Philippines double majoring in human resources and supply chain and a former student director of operations and development of the SAC, said he found the idea of the phone charging stations from the suggestion boxes on campus.

Anais Parker, a sophomore from Oahu majoring in biochemistry, shared how the new phone charging stations have benefited her. “I live in Honolulu, so I spend a lot of time in the Aloha Center between my classes. I also forget my charger a lot. The charging stations are helping me to just charge my phone, so I won’t be distracted by it while doing my homework. I am grateful to the SAC team for this awesome project.”

Upcoming projects

Tihani Langkilde, a senior from Samoa majoring in exercise and sports science and a student manager of the SAC team, said her team is planning to do several more projects in the near future, such as the “indoor co-ed hangout spot” in the Aloha Center. This center will have napping stations where students can rest between classes and play board games for fun, she added.

Other upcoming projects are the “My culture, My honor” booth and a future trip to the Mililani Walmart. They have done Walmart trips in the past and are doing another one for this Winter Semester 2020. They are also working to increase the number of shopping carts for BYUH Housing. The SAC team is also creating several videos about appropriate sports dress and grooming and what students learned from devotionals.

A student honor team is a sub-team of SAC, and their main goal is to promote the Honor Code. They host Honor Code modest fashion shows during every semester’s new student orientation. They also produce many different posters, handouts, pledge walls, and videos to promote the Honor Code.

Ramirez said the Honor Code is more than just dress and grooming. It is the following:

Be honest

Live a chaste and virtuous life

Obey the law and all campus policies

Use clean language

Respect others

Abstain from alcoholic beverages, tobacco, tea, coffee, and substance abuse

Participate regularly in church services

Observe dress and grooming standards

Encourage others in their commitment to comply with the Honor Code

Langkilde said the SAC is seeking sponsors who can provide prizes for their events and projects. She shared, “We give away prizes for our events, so we are looking for sponsors. It will be a good opportunity for local businesses to promote their products and services to BYUH students.”

Coronel invited students to give more suggestions to improve student life. It is possible their suggestion becomes a real project. Students can give suggestions through their social media pages, suggestion boxes around the campus, surveys, or contact SAC personally.
