Juggling between academics, social life and part-time jobs makes it challenging to have a consistent skincare routine, said Savatey Chhum. Students from BYUH shared how they managed to stay on top of their skincare routine while completing other important tasks.

Double cleansing

Chhum, a freshman from Cambodia majoring in business management, said she always cleans her face twice every night. She uses the Inkey List oat cleansing balm to wash off all her makeup and finish with acne-foaming face wash from Panoxyl, she said.

The cleansing balm is really good because it smells nice and does a great job at melting off all her makeup, explained Chhum. Her mascara is generally the hardest to remove, but the cleansing balm from the Inkey List did a great job with it, she said. Panoxyl acne foaming face wash is one of her must have, she said. “Benzoyl peroxide [10 percent present in the Panoxyl] is great if you have acne-prone skin like me because it helps to get rid of dirt and bacteria that could cause acne,” she explained.

Chhum said she occasionally would use toner from Beauty of Joseon if she felt like her face was too dry after the double cleansing. She explained toner helped to balance the pH level and get her face to look fresh and moisturized again.

Niacinamide and peeling solution

Joan Amadeus, a junior from Indonesia majoring in peacebuilding, said his favorite skincare brand is The Ordinary. He said, “I love using niacinamide and salicylic acid.” Niacinamide serum from the Ordinary helped reduce redness on his face making his skin tone feel even and less red, he added.

Amadeus said he started taking care of his face when he was a junior in high school. “I had many pimples on my forehead, and it made me lose confidence in myself.” He added he started to look for skincare recommendations on social media. “It was around 2018 when the Ordinary was becoming popular, so I decided to give it a try,” said Amadeus. Using the niacinamide serum not only helped reduce redness but also balanced out his oil level, he added. The serum might cause minor breakout the first week of use due to the skin needing time to get accustomed to the serum, he said.

Amadeus said he also used the Ordinary’s AHA+BHA peeling solution twice a week. The solution is a chemical peel you can do at home, he explained. Getting a chemical peel at the clinic generally costs more money, so doing it at home is cheaper but with the same benefits, he added. “The solution worked really well in removing dead skin and unclogging congestion in my pores,” said Amadeus. He added his face felt much cleaner and smoother after every use.

Red light therapy mask

Cheyenne La Torre, a freshman from the Philippines majoring in business management, shared her love for the red light therapy mask she purchased to care for her skin after long exposure to the sun. “This mask helps my skin absorb products better and boosts cell production and rejuvenation,” she said.

La Torre said she had been using it for over a year and it has helped her skin dramatically. She added, “The mask may look strange to some but it really works for me, and I hope people know more about this.”

Acne care: Petroleum jelly and night cream

Dave Noynay, a sophomore majoring in biology from the Philippines, said he had been using petroleum jelly from Nivea on his acne since he was just a teenager in high school. He said the petroleum jelly acted as a guard so the spot with acne would not be exposed to dirt and bacteria in the air while also making the acne less itchy. He said, “I generally tend to scratch my face and would accidentally pop the zit before it’s ready.”

Noynay said after he popped a zit he would apply a night cream from CeraVe on it. He said the cream helped to heal the zit faster by minimizing redness and scars on his face. “My face turned red very easily from minimal pressure so this cream saved my skin,” he said.
