Students share how to stay productive during break at BYU–Hawaii

During spring break, held April 20 to April 30 this year, BYU–Hawaii students take advantage to work, relax and prepare for the coming Spring Semester.

“Imagine yourself a month from now and think to yourself if you would regret how you are using your break time,” said Angela Fantone, a senior from the Philippines majoring in English. “If you would regret it, adjust your schedule so you feel productive.”

Fantone said spring break is also a good time to prepare for the upcoming semester. “I get my books organized and I check Canvas at least once and glance over my classes to have some kind of idea about what to expect.”

Moeka Nagai, a senior from Japan majoring in hospitality and tourism management, said, “People should think about what to do in break time during the semester and plan ahead so they can be more effective. I usually plan my break before break time comes around, so I know how much I’m working and when my day off is.”

How students stay busy during break

Nagai said students should use time effectively over the break. “I work 40 hours a week during break to keep myself productive. During my day off, I plan something fun to do. I was able to reserve skydiving a few weeks ahead. I went skydiving on my day off and that definitely kept me busy.”

Vika Funaki, a sophomore from Tonga majoring in biochemistry, agreed with Nagai, saying, “I try to work as much as I can over the break time. That keeps me busy. When I’m not at work I just like to relax during the break because there are no assignments. I find myself hanging out with my friends or going to the library to find a book because I try to read over the break.”

Fantone added, “I like to work on my other interests during the break. I have a blog and a podcast that I’m working on which keeps me busy. I also like to nap. It can also be a good time to recharge, but don’t waste your break doing that.”

Advice for activities during the break

Funaki said, “There is enough going on (during the break). I don’t go to them but I know there are things like free play sports with volleyball and basketball, there are ward activities still going and other things students can do. Coordinate with your friends time off together and do something fun.

“My advice would be to do service over the break. Find ways to help and serve people around campus or in the community. There are many opportunities available.”

Fantone said she wishes there were more activities around campus, but she believes there are enough things outside of campus for students.

With Fantone’s thoughts in mind, Nagai recalled, “I think the school could offer more activities for students who stay during break. I’ve had previous breaks where I haven’t had much to do and I wished that there was something around campus to do.”
