Big rugby game for the little islands of Tonga
The Aloha Center Ballroom exploded into a scene of people jumping and whooping as the Tonga National Rugby League Team scored their first goal. Fans and supporters gathered together and watched the Rugby League match between Mate Ma’a Tonga and the Australian Kangaroos on Oct. 19. Later a lone fan of the Australian team shouted for joy and waved the country’s flag as the Kangaroos made a goal against Mate Ma’a.
Alumnus Odgerel Ganbaatar brought fire knife dance to Mongolia and started his own crew
Odgerel Ganbaatar said he found his passion for fire knife dancing while studying at BYU– Hawaii. He shared how he worked hard to become a fire knife dancer at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC). After his graduation, he returned home and later created his own crew that has performed in different events, including the Mongolian National Holiday Parade.
Missionaries from South Pacific share uniqueness of returning with hundreds of others in same situation
A missionary couple serving in Kiribati, along with 300 missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints flew home on April 4 from the South Pacific island. They knew they needed to go home even though they didn’t want to, explained the couple.
Human rights organization at BYUH takes on local and international issues with service and fundraising
To help the United Nations with their poverty, climate change, women’s rights and children’s education efforts, the BYU-Hawaii Maka’ala Human Rights Organization set up a booth outside the Aloha Center on Tuesday, Oct. 24 to collect goods and donations. Accepted donations included clothing, water bottles, non-perishable goods and toiletries.
