Students who join BYU–Hawaii’s Pre-dental Club can receive assistance navigating the steps of getting into dental school, said the club’s former vice president. From preparing for the Dental Admissions Test, or DAT, to shadowing a dentist, and from science-related extracurricular activities to knowing what classes to take, the club’s president said his vision is for more people to join so they can learn together and support each other.
The Polynesian Cultural Center has been focused on how to share aloha while adhering to the state’s health and safety guidelines, said Seth Casey, senior manager of marketing at the PCC.
Laie Elementary School librarian says local author inspires children to ‘chase their big dreams too’
Several years after Rebecca J. Carlson wrote “Barley & Rye,” a 12,000-word story intended as a gift for her son’s 9th birthday, she said she found a publisher called Fiction Vortex who agreed to publish her story. Upon the publisher’s request, Carlson expanded the story to 50,000 words.
Crystal E. Tania said it’s rewarding to be back on campus after persevering through the pandemic because she can see the beauty that came from the difficult situation. “Everything is beautiful in its time, so don’t lose hope,” she explained.
Dating customs from around the world include couple rings, rental dates, sharing a meal and hanging out shared BYU–Hawaii students from Japan, Korea, the Philippines and Nevada.
Pristine V. Domingo, a junior from the Philippines studying clinical psychology, said, “First, I want to prepare myself to be qualified so I can serve the best I can. ... After I graduate, I am going to take the GRE ... and do an internship so I have the experience to back up my service.” She said she also plans to apply at BYU in Provo for a doctorate in psychology. “That way I could help people with their psychotherapy and career counseling. So those are my ways of leading, helping people and building the kingdom of God after I graduate.”
Playing in Kahuku High School’s band sparked alumnus Eddie Maiava’s love for music and led him to BYU–Hawaii, he said. The Kahuku High School marching band used to practice on the BYUH campus, he said, and after practice one day, shortly before his high school graduation, a music professor invited him to join the University’s band class.
Rajkumar Tamang, a senior from Kathmandu, Nepal, studying social work, is the secretary of the Great India Club. He said culture and music brings people together. “When there is music going on, it doesn’t matter which country is playing it. We all like to listen to it, to dance with it and to have fun. ... I think I saw that. … [It] brought all of us together,” he said.
Club President Amreth (LeGrand) Phirun, a senior from Cambodia studying communications, said there are currently only two Cambodians on BYU–Hawaii’s campus, him and his wife. The rest of their 12-member club performers are from countries like the Philippines, the United States, Myanmar and Mongolia.
From getting plastic out of the ocean, opening a barbershop and selling affordable goat milk products in the Philippines to fight poverty, BYU–Hawaii students are committed to serving others around the world.
When Paolo Poblete decided on being a biology major, he said he realized he didn’t want to give up his ability to express himself through writing. So, he wrote a poetry book.
When Terrence A. Dela Peña was selected to be the Winter 2021 Commencement student speaker, his mentor, Jennifer Kajiyama Tinkham, said she knew he was the perfect student to represent BYU–Hawaii.
Night Show lead says she is inspired by her parents and great-grandmother who also danced at the PCC
Dancing at the Polynesian Cultural Center since she was 4 years old, Indigo Tetuaapua now plays the lead role of Lani in the Center’s evening show, Hā: Breath of Life. As both her parents and even her great-grandmother performed at the Center, Tetuaapua said her life revolves around the PCC.
Auahi Aiu, a sophomore from Pearl City, Hawaii, majoring in marketing, said he loves to surf at Castles Beach and hike on the Friendship Gardens Trail and the Aiea Loop Trail. He said he also enjoys going on short road trips with four or five friends, such as driving from Laie to Costco.
Curt Christiansen, the advisor of the BYU–Hawaii Dive Club for the last 16 years, said his first encounter with diving occurred when he was 15 years old. Now, after more than 30 years of diving experience, he looks back on his underwater adventures and said the best part about diving is experiencing it alongside someone else.
