Alumnus Eddie Maiava shares his musical journey and how he returned to BYUH to give back to campus and community
Playing in Kahuku High School’s band sparked alumnus Eddie Maiava’s love for music and led him to BYU–Hawaii, he said. The Kahuku High School marching band used to practice on the BYUH campus, he said, and after practice one day, shortly before his high school graduation, a music professor invited him to join the University’s band class.

During Culture Night practices, the India Club focused on enjoying the journey and sharing its culture
Rajkumar Tamang, a senior from Kathmandu, Nepal, studying social work, is the secretary of the Great India Club. He said culture and music brings people together. “When there is music going on, it doesn’t matter which country is playing it. We all like to listen to it, to dance with it and to have fun. ... I think I saw that. … [It] brought all of us together,” he said.

Although only two Cambodians are currently on campus, 12 students rallied together to perform for the club
Club President Amreth (LeGrand) Phirun, a senior from Cambodia studying communications, said there are currently only two Cambodians on BYU–Hawaii’s campus, him and his wife. The rest of their 12-member club performers are from countries like the Philippines, the United States, Myanmar and Mongolia.

Auahi Aiu, a sophomore from Pearl City, Hawaii, majoring in marketing, said he loves to surf at Castles Beach and hike on the Friendship Gardens Trail and the Aiea Loop Trail. He said he also enjoys going on short road trips with four or five friends, such as driving from Laie to Costco.
